Volunteers at School

On the first Saturday of every month the Tigri school plans to have extra activities for the students so that they can have some fun too! We had two volunteers visiting our school along with our five school staff. It was a fun day for the kids. They were able to speak English, sing, and play some indoor games as well. Over all it was a very inspiring day for the children. We look forward to more people joining us to make a difference in these kids’ life.

Children's Day at School

As children in India celebrated Children's Day on November 14th the students at school were not left behind. Thanks to some wonderful volunteers who decided to give the children a reason to smile and enjoy their day. These volunteers brought along with them choclates, chips and juice, which the students enjoyed. They got to watch an animated movie too. It was a wonderful treat for the students. A treat which they would cherish, since most of their parents struggle to even to feed them with basic meals. What is normal for most is "extra-ordinary" for these children. The day ended with the students getting some free stationery too. Thanks again, to the volunteers.

Firasat - Persevering for the future

Firasat is a 12 year old student from Uttar Pradesh. His father works as a fruit vendor, while the mother helps out by pressing cloths by ironing. He has 3 sisters, of whom the eldest being married. They had migrated to Delhi with hopes of making it better financially.
Firasat's father earns Rs.100 to 200 in a day out of which he has to purchase fruits for the next day's sales too. He works very hard. Firasat's mother is very sick, therefore not able to help out much. His young sister has undergone a surgery, and he has to help out his mother with chores at home. As things are quite challenging for a boy of this age, Firasat is very determined not to drop out of school and to make the most out of it. Some times his mother tries to stop him from education as she sees it as a futile effort and thinks it is better for him to start earning. But he has dreams of being an army officer one day.

Hot Mid-day meals for the students

"To keep a lamp burning we have to keep putting oil in it" - Mother Teresa
One of the basic requirements that the poor lack quite often, is a hot and nourishing meal. Our students fall in that category often. Most of their families cannot afford three square meals a day. Some times they are forced to go on empty stomach. This would often lead to dropping out and begging, stealing, etc.
Dunnhumby, one of our corporate partners have helped us to counter this issue by providing for a mid-day meal program. Thanks to them, 260 children at the school now receive a hot and nourishing meal everyday, Monday to Friday. This is practically a source of encouragement for the litlle ones.

Day out at Oracle

Oracle has supported the Tigri School for many years. On Saturday 19th of September they invited some of our older students to spend the day at their office in Gurgaon to celebrate their Global Volunteer Day.

The Oracle staff spent the day joining in activities with the students of our school. They had organised a drawing competition, relay races, and other games. The children enjoyed their day out. They loved the snacks and the lovely lunch that were served.

We were so proud of the students as they confidently spoke in front of the staff about their dreams, their family life, and their gratitude at thechance to gain an education.

The School in Tigri

HOPE worldwide started a school in May 2004 in the Tigri area of South Delhi. A survey revealed that there were around 5000 children in this colony who could not go to school due to various problems. For most of the children in this area, the HOPE school is the only place where they will receive a decent education.
For over 20 years ago, the Tigri area of South Delhi was a rubbish dump for the surrounding villages. Slowly people started to stay and a slum developed. It began to grow rapidly as immigrants from neighboring states would flock to the Capital in the hope of finding better job opportunities. As a result, the population of the slum grew and as there were very few opportunities, it became a breeding ground for anti-social activities.
Under dire circumstances the school was started. Now thanks to many friends who have supported, the school has 4 proper classrooms, with electricity. The school consists of over 260 students. The students enjoy good education and also a hearty hot meal during the day, thanks again to friend's support.
Now the children who would otherwise have been involved in dubious activities have become students who dream big and learn to achieve that dream.
